New York State Dyslexia & Dysgraphia Task Force: Report and Recommendations
Please check out the report using the link below or click the image, and share the report with your school district board of education, administrators, and teachers. 
We must discuss the recommendations and how school districts can best implement them. The report's outline is a solid start, but let's push for increased oversight and accountability. Establishing a Center or Division for Dyslexia and Dysgraphia would help, but this would require adequate funding and setting up proper independent oversight.

According to the Education Consumers Foundation (2019), illiteracy costs New York State more than $3.6 billion annually. Low literacy skills significantly contribute to poverty and disenfranchisement. Screening and remediating at-risk children, youth, and adults in the Information Age is a vital human right. Equitable access to education promotes social justice and increases resilience and quality of life for all New Yorkers.

Make a Call, Make a Difference for Children with Dyslexia.... 

NY Remains as one of 20 states that have NO LITERACY LAWS enabling schools to use programs that have no evidence to support the science of explicit literacy instruction.

51% of 3rd-grade general education students cannot read to grade level/are below proficient
3rd-grade reading proficiency is the single most important indicator of a student's educational progress and the likelihood of academic success. Children who have not mastered foundational reading skills by that point are educationally disadvantaged for a lifetime. Without remediation, they are unlikely to optimally benefit from their education and become all they could be in life.

70% of below-proficient 3rd-graders are likely to graduate from high school unprepared for college or will drop out completely.

Failure to teach reading costs NY tax payers 3-BILLION per year in extra taxes!
And why? Only one reason: lobbyists 👉🏾 $$$$$$ more important than our children lives, the future of New York or New York tax payers. 
Call Governor Hochul, and ask her why she vetoed the DYSLEXIA TASK FORCE BILL

What's the Dyslexia task Force Bill?The Dyslexia Task Force Act, A.2185-B/S.441-C, passed the Assembly and Senate! 

The bill will establish a statewide task force to examine appropriate and effective evidence-based screening, intervention, and support for students with and at risk of dyslexia and dysgraphia. This is the result of years of work and advocacy and represents the first major piece of legislation focused on dyslexia screening, curriculum, and teacher training that has ever passed in New York, so let's make sure the Senate passes this bill!
This legislation will mandate the Commissioner of the State Education Department to create a task force of educators, doctors, researchers, parents and advocates to examine and recommend the appropriate and evidence based screening methods, curriculum changes and teacher training that should be implemented for all students in kindergarten through 5th grade with dyslexia and dysgraphia.

Register for "Speak Up for Literacy" Campaign at Dyslexia Advocacy Action Group

Present New York State Education Department data to your local school representatives. Let them know how many students are reading below grade level, how your district compares with other districts in your county, whether students are making progress at your district, and the bigger picture - how much illiteracy costs taxpayers. Why this is happening and what they can do about it...

  • Brochure to hand out to committee members
  • Reading by district; a comparison chart for all districts in New York State 
  • The cost of failure to teach reading at your school district: what this costs tax payers
  • School district policy that will enable your school's board to increase literacy skills for ALL children

A few DDNY members got together and started the charity Dyslexia Advocacy Action Group. We advocate for students who are not getting their needs met at their school districts, have resources for independent educational evaluations, and legal counsel.
Furthermore, we run free workshops on a range of topics including advocacy in New York, and IEP goals. At the heart of our BOE campaign, we want to encourage parents to speak-up at their local school district board education meetings by providing all the materials (3-minute testimony, brochure and slides). In addition you can purchase our $30 advocacy t-shirt (all profits go to advocating for underprivileged children), and send the message to BOE members about effective approaches to teach reading, and that reading is not guessing at unknown words!

Please join us and help us campaign to turn New York's horrible failure to teach reading (this includes failing general education students too). Let's hold NYSED accountable, join our class action lawsuit!
